A Long Journey

A fairly quick drawing I made today. It's 23x30 inches and I know I'm uploading it reaally late at night (4:30am here!) but it's only this late because I got distracted watching a lot of shows on Hulu. I love the Hulu.

Anyways, as simple as it is (I may add to it later today) it's meant to be symbolic of the long journey of LGBT people towards equality. Today, July 16th, 2009, the United States senate will be voting on the Matthew Shepard Act. If it passes (it will, god willing) then all members of the LGBT community will be protected under the same hate crimes laws that protect every other minority from discrimination-based offenses and brings us one step closer to equality.

The journey will be far from over there, but it will be a leg finally surpassed.

I'll state ahead of time that I agree with anyone that believes hate crime laws shouldn't exist, or at least need to exist...but given the nature of all too many people in this day and age, they are still a necessity. Perhaps some day in the future this needless way of marginalizing every group of people into statistics will become a thing of the past, but that time isn't here yet.

I wanted this deviation done today (I just started it today, too) so that I'd have it finished BEFORE the decision on the Act was reached.
